Text

(KJV)
1 When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.
2 And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
3 And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
4 And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
40 And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
41 And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.
42 And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.
43 And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away;
44 And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
45 But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.
12 And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
13 And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.
14 And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
15 But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.
16 And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.
Manuscripts
  1. Egerton Papyrus 2:  "And behold, a leper, coming to him, said, "Master Jesus, journeying with lepers and eating with them in the inn, I also became a leper."  Also, uses plural form of "priests" instead of singular as in the canon.

Differences
  1. Coming down from the mountain after the Sermon on the Mount
  2. Great crowds following
  1. Jesus could no longer openly enter a town because of the spreading fame.
  1. While he was in one of the cities
  2. Leper fell on his face
  3. Jesus withdrew and prayed.
  1. Leper knelt before Jesus

  1. Word spread rapidly of the healing
  2. Multitudes came from everywhere to be healed.
  3. Jesus stayed in the countryside / wilderness.
Similarities
  1. Leper came and requested healing
  2. Believed that Jesus could heal him if he would
  3. Jesus said, "I will"
  4. Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him
  5. Immediately the leprosy left and the man was clean
  6. Instructed not to tell anyone
  7. Instructed to show himself to the priest and make an offering according to the command of Moses as proof and testimony.

Issues

  1. Text
    1. Egerton Papyrus 2 -- Dated ca. 150 or earlier;  2nd oldest known existing Christian manuscript; includes sayings of Jesus not included in the canonical Gospels; discovered in Egypt, 1934
  2. Harmony
    1. In Matthew, this event appears immediately after the Sermon on the Mount [Event 062].  In Mark and Luke it appears in the early part of  the Travel through Galilee [Event 048].
    2. Throckmorton follows Matthew's chronology, placing the event after the Sermon on the Mount, and before the healings at Peter's house [Events 046 & 047].  Stevens & Burton follow the placement used by Mark and Luke, as does Robertson.  Tatian places it much later (Diatessaron 22:1-8).
  3. Leprosy
    1. Hansen's Disease
      1. bacterial disease of peripheral nervous system and upper respiratory tract;
      2. untreatable until 1940, but by 1960 the bacteria had evolved complete resistance.  An expensive multi-drug therapy is currently used over a 2 yr. period, alternating antibiotics to avoid resistance.  As of start of 2006, there were 219,826 known cases, of which 32,904 were in the Americas.  The highest concentration of cases was 133,422 in Southeast Asia;  lowest was 4,024 in Eastern Mediterranean.
      3. Some arguments are made that Biblical leprosy was different than Hansen's Disease
    2. Unclean:  The law of Moses, Leviticus chap. 13;  See LV 13:45-46
    3. Ritual Cleansing for Healed Lepers, Levitcus chap. 14
  4. The Will of God
  5. KJV translates "stretched out his hand and touched him" the same in all three passages.
  6. Laying on of Hands
  7. Instruction not to tell anyone
  8. Spreading the Word about Jesus
  9. Motive of the crowds in coming to see Jesus
