    Observations
    • What changed?  From Sunday to Friday, what changed?  Are we subject to the same change?
    • Do we live in the same "lukewarm" religion where we worship Christ with all true devotion on Sunday but by Friday we've pretty much lost our religion?
    • We pledge allegiance to the flag... where does Christ rank in our hearts?
    • King of Kings & Lord of Lords... but more importantly, King & Lord of Our Hearts, our personal Lord and Savior -- if not of our hearts then not at all.
    • They have their king, and we have ours.
    • Everybody's got somebody.
    • The four records of the inscription are:
      • Matthew 27:37, "And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS."
      • Mark 15:26, "And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS."
      • Luke 23:38, "And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew,
      • THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS."
      • John 19:19, "And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS."

    Quotes & Notes
    • God intended it to be a declaration of what he really was, notwithstanding his present disgrace:  he is the king of the Jews, the king of the church, and his cross is the way to his crown.

    • - Matthew Henry, Commentary, Vol. 5, p. 826
    • Luke transposes the passion from the key of tragedy to the key of pathos..

    • - Reginald H. Fuller, Preaching the Lectionary, p. 417
    • The soldiers' mockery and Pilate's inscription ironically and publicly declare the truth.

    • Wayne A. Meeks, HarperCollins Study Bible, p. 2007
    • The superscription is given differently in all four Gospels.  When they are put together we have:  'This is Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.'

    • - J. McNicol, New Bible Commentary: Luke (1954), p. 862
    • The Greek was the universal language of literature;  the Latin was the language of the Roman empire;  the Hebrew (being the Aramean or Chaldee-Syriac) was spoken vernacularly by the Jews.  The rabbins say there are three most perfect languages:  the Roman for battle, the Greek for conversation, the Syriac for prayers.

    • - D.D. Whedon, Commentary on the Gospels, Vol. Luke-John, p. 212
    • Undoubtedly these were the very words, although the other evangelists do not express them at large.

    • - John Wesley, Notes Upon the New Testament, Vol. 1, on John 19:19

      • is used of the Roman Emperor... of Herod the Tetrarch...of Christ, as the King of the Jews... as the King of Israel... as King of kings

      • the "Great King"... the "King eternal, incorruptible, invisible"
      • King of the ages
      • "Deissmann has shown that the title 'king of kings' was in 'very early eastern history a decoration of great monarchs and also a divine title'  (Light from the Ancient East, pp. 367, f.).  Moulton and Milligan illustrate the use of the title among the Persians, from documents discovered in Media."
