  • Robertson's Word Pictures:
As a little child (hôs paidion). How does a little child receive the kingdom of God? The little child learns to obey its parents simply and uncomplainingly. There are some new psychologists who argue against teaching obedience to children. The results have not been inspiring. Jesus here presents the little child with trusting and simple and loving obedience as the model for adults in coming into the kingdom. Jesus does not here say that children are in the kingdom of God because they are children.

  • William Burkitt's Notes:

    (No comment on this verse).

  • Family Bible Notes:

Receive the kingdom of God; submit to the guidance and government of Christ with the humble and docile spirit of a little child. Mt 3:2.

  • 1599 Geneva Bible Notes:
In our malice we must become as children if we will enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Whosoever shall not receive. Whosoever shall not manifest the spirit of a little child.

The kingdom of God. The gospel. The new dispensation by the Messiah, or the reign of God through a Mediator. See Barnes for Mt 3:2.

As a little child. With the temper and spirit of a child teachable, mild, humble, and free from prejudice and obstinacy.

Shall not enter therein. Shall not be a Christian; shall not be a real member of the family of Christ on earth, though he may be a professor; and shall never enter heaven.

  • Spurgeon Devotional Commentary:

We must possess the simplicity, teachableness, and trustfulness of children, or else grace is not in us. Like them also we must be free from avarice and ambition.
