He that seeks first the kingdom of heaven is sure to have every temporal requisite. When a man ensures the first, God always takes care to throw the other into the bargain. He who has an interest in Jesus has in him an inexhaustible treasure of spiritual and temporal good. Though the means by which man may help his fellows have failed, we are not to suppose that the bounty of God is exhausted. Jesus knew how much they had, and he required of them, as he does of all, implicit faith, and told them to give them to eat. He requires us to do what he commands; and we need not doubt that he will give us strength to accomplish it.

We learn from the parallel accounts that the disciples did not understand how this could be done, though they cheerfully obeyed. [See Mr 6:37; Lu 9:13; Joh 6:7,9].

Give ye them to eat (dote autois hûmeis phagein). The emphasis is on hûmeis in contrast (note position) with their "send away" (apoluson). It is the urgent aorist of instant action (dote). It was an astounding command. The disciples were to learn that "no situation appears to Him desperate, no crisis unmanageable" (Bruce).

Glorious word! "They need not depart." We are able, when he is with us, to meet any cases of want which may arise; we never need send the multitude away to be dealt with by the State, by the parish, or by hirelings. If we will but set to work, we shall find that the Lord makes us competent for every emergency. "Give ye them to eat": you talk of their buying for themselves, but they are penniless, and cannot buy. Everything must be free, or they will starve; you are the men to feed them freely; get at it. Begin at once

Genesis 32:22-31

     22   And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants,
     and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.
     23   And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.
     24   And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of
     the day.
     25   And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his
     thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
     26   And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go,
     except thou bless me.
     27   And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
     28   And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince
     hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
     29   And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said,
     Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
     30   And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face,
     and my life is preserved.
     31   And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his
     thigh.

Romans 9:1-5

     1   I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the
     Holy Ghost,
     2   That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.
     3   For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen
     according to the flesh:
     4   Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the
     covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;
     5   Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is
     over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.

Psalm 17:1-7, 15

     1   Hear the right, O LORD, attend unto my cry, give ear unto my prayer, that goeth
     not out of feigned lips.
     2   Let my sentence come forth from thy presence; let thine eyes behold the things
     that are equal.
     3   Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me,
     and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.
     4   Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the
     paths of the destroyer.
     5   Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.
     6   I have called upon thee, for thou wilt hear me, O God: incline thine ear unto me,
     and hear my speech.
     7   Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them
     which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them.
     15   As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I
     awake, with thy likeness.

Matthew 14:13-21

     13   When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and
     when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.
     14   And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion
     toward them, and he healed their sick.
     15   And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place,
     and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages,
     and buy themselves victuals.
     16   But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.
     17   And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.
     18   He said, Bring them hither to me.
     19   And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five
     loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave
     the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
     20   And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that
     remained twelve baskets full.
     21   And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and
     children.
