"And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only
in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward." - Matthew 10:42

We meet Christ in fellowship, community and service.

We meet Christ in each other.
The benefits of Christian community are shared by all participants.

Love heightens the smallest actions, and gives a worth to them which they cannot possess without it. Under a just and merciful God every sin is either punished or pardoned, and every good action rewarded. The most indigent may exercise the works of mercy and charity; seeing even a cup of cold water, given in the name of Jesus, shall not lose its reward. How astonishing is God's kindness! It is not the rich merely whom he calls on to be charitable; but even the poor, and the most impoverished of the poor! God gives the power and inclination to be charitable, and then rewards the work which, it may be truly said, God himself hath wrought. It is the name of Jesus that sanctifies every thing, and renders services, in themselves comparatively contemptible, of high worth in the sight of God. See Quesnel.

By these are clearly meant his disciples. They are called little ones, to denote their want of wealth, rank, learning, and whatever the world calls great. A cup of cold water only. Few would refuse a cup of cold water to any man, if thirsty and weary; and yet few would give it to such an one because he was a Christian, or to express attachment to the Lord Jesus. In bestowing it on a man because he was a Christian, he would show love to the Saviour himself; in the other case, he would give it from mere sympathy, or kindness, evincing no regard for the Christian, the Christian's Master, or His cause. In one case, he would show that he loved the cause of religion; in the other, not.

The smallest act of kindness. If done "because he was a disciple," or out of regard for Christ, he should never lose his reward. Good deeds are never lost. Note the six things here spoken of as belonging to discipleship of Christ: (1) Confessing, or professing; (2) Fighting; (3) Bearing his standard (the cross); (4) Suffering; (5) Following; (6) Giving up life. These are all the duties of the soldier.

One of the marks of the church is its hospitality. This was especially relevent before the age of Holiday Inns. Yet it is not enough for the church to practice good manners; the receiving and giving of the church are done under the "In as much..." command of Matt. 25.Our task as a church is to be as open to the "little ones," the powerless, the marginalized, the dispised as we are to the Lord. Shutting out the poor is shutting out Jesus. Helping in practical ways those who cannot help themselves is helping Jesus.

Matthew 10:40-42

40   He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
41   He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.
42   And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

Genesis 22:1-14

1   And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
2   And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
3   And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
4   Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
5   And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.
6   And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
7   And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
8   And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
9   And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
10   And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
11   And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
12   And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
13   And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
14   And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

Romans 6:12-23

12   Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
13   Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
14   For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
15   What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
16   Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
17   But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
18   Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
19   I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
20   For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
21   What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
22   But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
23   For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalm 13

1   How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?
2   How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?
3   Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;
4   Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved.
5   But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation.
